Today will be a very exciting day for Lucy and I. She has a pediatric appointment (18 month well baby visit) today at 10am and then from there we will be participating in an annual Breastfeeding Awareness Walk in Sacramento, CA from 12pm at the state capital. I'm pretty stoked to join up with other like-minded mothers who know that human babies should drink human milk.
I am a lactivist.
Completely and udder-ly convinced that breast is what is best for babies. I am very anti-formula (powdered chemicals in a can masquerading around as a alternative to natural mothers milk really makes me ill) and believe in child-led weaning meaning that Lucy will decide when she is ready to quit the boob. No, she won't be nursing while in college and she probably won't be nursing in kindergarten either but the choice is hers to make. She is a very intelligent and very independent little girl and when she is ready to wean I am confident she will let me know.
I strongly believe that breastfeeding Lucy has given her an extra boost for her immune system to help her stay as healthy as can be! I think of it as a free insurance policy to help fight against and reduce illnesses. Its the least I can do for her! Contrary to popular belief, the immunities and health benefits that a child gets from breast milk does not suddenly stop after a year old! The benefits continue and the biological and chemical composition of milk changes over time to meet the needs of a growing child.
I will continue to breastfeed as long as it is meeting Lucy's emotional and nutritional needs.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Nathan weaned himself at 6 months (overnight). Now that I think about it was probably a nursing strike but I didnt know what to do.
I had no lactation support and was overwhelmed with CF as it was that I had a very difficult time emotionally dealing with his refusal. I pray next time to breastfeed longer.
Isn't it difficult to manage the "zymies" during the capsule breaking stage? I had a hard time getting set up (apple sauce, spoon, enzymes, all within reach for when he needed another) while he was screaming for food.
